Daft Punk Announce One-Day Theatrical Release of ‘Insterstella 5555,’ Anime Visual Album for ‘Discovery,’ Plus Exclusive Collector’s Editions

Though Daft Punk remain disbanded, the legendary French touch duo have reignited their global fandom today with the announcement of the first-ever theatrical release of Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. Famously debuted in 2001 as the accompanying music videos for the duo’s groundbreaking sophomore album Discovery, today’s dispatch promises a 4K remaster of the beloved collaboration with anime and manga innovator Leiji Matsumoto and Toei Animation, now compiled into a full-length visual album. Interstella 5555 will be screened in theaters around the world on Dec. 12.

Interstella 5555 is a riveting space odyssey that tells the story of an alien band’s abduction, brainwashing to become pop sensations The Crescendolls, and struggle to escape back to the stars. It’s a bright, campy, thrilling and action-packed romp set against the project that Apple Music recently identified as the 23rd best album of all time, featuring timeless hits like “One More Time,” “Harder Better Faster Stronger,” “Something About Us,” “Veridis Quo” and “Face to Face.” Until this year, the project had never officially been shared in full.

“‘One More Time’ was playing all over the town at that time!” recalls Shinji Shimizu of Toei Animation, who produced the film. “I felt so proud that I wanted to shout to people on the street, ‘We are making its animation now!’”

Trafalgar Releasing CEO Marc Allenby offers on the new release, “We’re excited to bring Daft Punk’s iconic Interstella 5555, now fully remastered in stunning 4K, to cinemas for this one-night-only global event. This is a rare opportunity to experience the film on the big screen, along with accompanying Daft Punk music videos, and we can’t wait to share it with audiences everywhere.”

Daft Punk’s film will be released in more than 800 theaters across 40 countries. Tickets will officially go on sale on Nov. 13; for more information, visit interstella5555film.com. To support the screenings, Daft Punk have also launched a range of new Interstellar 5555 edition repressings of Discovery and new merch, including a limited edition double-LP gold vinyl packaged in the original Japanese album cover.
