On Saturday, Nov. 9, Cris Jacobs and his band arrived at the storied Burlington, Vt. venue, Nectar’s, for an appearance billed on his current One Of These Days Tour. During the event, Jacobs seized the opportunity to welcome a local favorite for select covers, tapping Phish bassist Mike Gordon for a pair of songs that built on their collaborative past.
Before Saturday’s sit-in, Jacobs had previously crossed paths with Gordon on select occasions. Notably, during the onset of Gordon’s solo career, Jacobs’ The Bridge project opened and jammed with the bassist, initiating their on-stage exchange. Over the years, the founding member of Phish reprised his instrumental conversations with Jacobs in select settings–including a 2019 Phish aftershow.
Building off their already-established relationships, Jacobs invited Gordon to join in on covers of Little Feat’s “Two Trains” and the Larry Jon Wilson original “Ohoopee River Bottomland.” Gordon’s accompaniment was a perfect fit for his hosts, who took a cue from the latter’s jam roots to elicit troves of instrumental spontaneity.
