Vocalist and guitarist Celisse announced a livestream performace from the new Relix Studio in New York City. She will take the Relix stage on Tuesday, May 11 at 8 p.m. ET.

Celisse was a part of Trey Anastasio’s Ghosts of the Forest project. She also appeared on stage with him during his The Beacon Jams run in October 2020. Over the course of her career, she has performed with such artists as Melissa Etheridge, Joss Stone, Macy Gray, Lizzo, Mariah Carey and Phish.

In June of 2020, Celisse released the single and music video “Freedom.” She discussed the song project in a Relix feature in the fall of 2020.

“The ‘Freedom’ project started in July 2016. It was the week that Philando Castile and Alton Sterling were both killed,” she wrote. “It was so frustrating and disheartening and I said to myself: ‘I need to write something. I need to contribute in some way.’ And I felt that the biggest contribution I could make was with my artistic voice. So I wrote the bones of “Freedom”—the chord changes and the lyrics—that week.”

The project was put on hold for a while, but Celisse was moved to revive it this past summer. “When George Floyd, Tony McDade and Nina Pop were killed, it lit a fire in me creatively,” she wrote. “I just said, ‘Enough is enough. We have this project— this is the time, even though I’ve never even performed this song live.’ I really wanted to release ‘Freedom’ the right way and, more than ever, it just felt like the perfect time. Especially as a Black artist, it gave me a really clear path of where I should go in the creative space.

“It took four years for everything to come together— for the message to come together. Hopefully, it will really speak to people,” she continued. “Seeing footage of people around the world protesting has been so energizing, exciting and inspiring. I really want to believe that this time will be different.” Read the full piece here.

Celisse’s Relix Studio performance will be streamed for free on The Relix Channel on Twitch. Earlier this year, Garcia Peoples performed the first Relix Sessions livestream from the new studio. The new performance space has since seen sets by Joshua Henry, Olivia Reid, Mikaela Davis and more. Meanwhile, The Relix Channel on Twitch has played host to a variety of noteworthy live shows, including Goose’s ‘Goosemas’ holiday show and two of Billy Strings’ six Deja Vu Experiment shows.
