California governor Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday, April 6 that he is eyeing June 15 for statewide reopening, freeing up the countless historic music venues in the Golden State.

“With more than 20 million vaccines administered across the state, it is time to turn the page on our tier system and begin looking to fully reopen California’s economy,” Gov. Newsom said via press release. “We can now begin planning for our lives post-pandemic.”

According to San Francisco’s CBS affiliate, this lift will reopen “restaurants, bars, churches, movie theaters, sport and entertainment venues, and all other businesses that have been struggling to survive under the tough restrictions. In addition, all schools and universities would be re-opened for in-person instruction.”

California has been praised for its vaccine distribution – at 20 million doses, it has vaccinated 7.2 million more people than any other state.

However, Gov. Newsom was sure to note that this timeline is dependent on continued mask-wearing and additional vaccinations.

“It’s incumbent on all of us now not to announce mission accomplished, not to put down our guard, but to continue that vigilance that got us to where we are today, with the lowest case rates in America,” he added. “We are seeing a bright light at the end of the tunnel.”
