Last night, Bob Dylan brought his current European tour to Bremen, Germany’s ÖVB-Arena. While guitarist Mike Seal seems to have settled into his role as one of the group’s steady lead guitarists—following a period of flux where Bob Britt and Doug Lancio both left the band in June, with Joel Paterson Julian Lage and Jad Tariq handling guitar at different points during the summer—Dylan has continued to shakeup his setlist while in Europe this fall.
For the first time since his US summer run came to a close in August, Dylan opened the night with “Watching the River Flow,” instead of “To Be Along with You,” and he then pulled out the Time Out of Mind single “Love Sick” for the first time since June 6, before Britt and Lancio stepped away. Then, later in the night, Dylan and his combo—which also includes Paterson, longtime bassist Tony Garnier and drummer Anton Fig—had an even bigger surprise in store, busing out the Time Out of Mind track “Million Miles” for the first time since June 23, 2014. While the number enjoyed regular play in the late ’90s, following the album’s 1997 release, it was only offered once in 2012 and 2014, the last two years Dylan decided to dust off the tune.
Dylan has already revived the classic tunes “Girl From the North Country” and “Tangled Up in Blue” while in Europe and he debuted both Randy Newman’s “Louisiana 1927” and Guy Clark’s “Dublin Blues” on opening night. His tour continues at Dusseldorf, Germany’s Mitsubishi Electric Halle tomorrow.
