Medeski, Martin & Wood drummer Billy Martin has offered an update after he was involved in a care accident in July. Martin broke his right band, forcing him to cancel some summer appearances.
In a note Martin shares, “Hey Folks, mid-July, I was in a serious car accident and broke my right hand. It’s been a real blow since drumming is my main livelihood, and right now I can’t take gigs until October I’m told. Fortunately, no-one else was involved. Just me and a giant tree - who survived with barely a scrape. The car was totaled. I am so fortunate to have survived. As most of you know I have many other creative outlets. But using my hands has been of utmost importance. So, I’ve been taking it slow. Smelling the roses, reflecting, envisioning new pathways. In the meantime, I’ve got my improvisers class at The New School this upcoming semester and private students at my home studio The Herman House Gallery or online. I’m also preparing to release a new series of illuminated sculptures, and I hope to sell some of that work to help support myself through this recovery period before I can return to drumming. Martin to slated to perform at New York’s The Stone, which is located at the New School, on October 16. The gig, dubbed, NOLA x NY, will also feature Byron Asher (woodwinds, electronics), Jeff Albert (trombone), Kathryn Schulmeister (bass) and event curator Alexandria Smith (trumpet, electronics). MMW played their first proper shows in several years a few months ago aboard Jam Cruise and in South Korea.
