Billy Martin will play a series of shows throughout New York City next week. The Medeski, Martin & Wood drummer will team up with saxophonist Matt Glassmeyer and guitarist Jonathan Goldberger for a show at Nublu this Monday, October 26, supporting their new experimental jazz album State Fête, which arrived earlier this year on Adhyaropa Records. (The gig was supposed to take place in July but was rescheduled after Martin injured himself in a car accident.) Then, on Thursday, October 29, Martin will partner with Steven Bernstein (trumpets, EVI), Scotty Hard (other music) and Scott Colley (bass) for a performance billed as UltraResonance at The Stone and, on Friday, October 30, he will appear at the same venue with Bernstein and Marcus Rojas (tuba) for a night of improv described as Nu Diaspora Blues.
The Stone gigs are part of a week of Bernstein-curated shows. He will also perform with the Resonation Trio, Colley and drummer Tom Rainey on Wednesday, October 28, and play a special Sexmob Kurt Weill Halloween event at the venue on October 31. The latter gig will find his Sexmob ensemble rounded out by Briggan Krauss (sax), Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums).
As previously reported, Martin will regroup with MMW for their first North American date since 2022 at New Orleans’ The Orpheum Theater on Friday, April 23, during Jazz Fest.
