Allen Toussaint’s Songbook endures as a core work in his illustrious and prolific career. After more than five decades as a performer, producer and composer, the late New Orleans rhythm and blues sensation’s first live album looked back on the catalog he’d amassed and proved his unparalleled ability to renew immortal standards. Now, that classic album will receive an expanded deluxe reissue, sharing more of the hallowed sets and Toussaint’s reflections through unheard B-sides and interviews.

Set to release on May 29 via Craft Recordings, the deluxe Songbook extends the 25-track album with 20 new tracks. Eight of the additions are from the same 2009 two-night engagement at New York landmark Joe’s Pub that sourced the original collection; these previously unreleased songs from the club that encouraged his late-career renaissance include the Steve Goodman’s “City of New Orleans,” out today as an advance single, as well as “What Do You Want The Girl To Do” and Jerry Garcia’s “Hi Lee Hi.” The remaining are taken from Paul Siegel interviews at Ossining, N.Y.’s BiCoastal Music, mixing intimate performances and commentary in a time capsule of a special chapter in Toussaint’s life and music.

The expanded reissue will be released on digital and as a two-CD set, the latter featuring the original accompanying essay from Grammy–winning writer and producer Ashley Kahn, plus new liner notes from the album’s producer, Paul Siege. “Allen Toussaint’s contribution to American music, as musician, composer, arranger, and record producer cannot be overstated,” Siegel expressed. “It has been the honor of a lifetime for me to have been granted the opportunity to document his creative genius in Songbook.”
