Fyre Festival Founder Billy McFarland Arrested, Charged with Fraud

July 1, 2017

Co-founder of the disastrous Fyre Festival Billy McFarland was arrested yesterday and charged with one count of wire fraud.

In a statement, acting United States attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon H. Kim said, “McFarland allegedly presented fake documents to induce investors to put over a million dollars into his company and the fiasco called the Fyre Festival.”

The arrest comes on the heels of a number of lawsuits leveed against the festival after the event left hundreds stranded in the Bahamas. McFarland and his team at Fyre Media have taken a number of steps to cover their tracks but leaked documents have displayed the type of negligence that comes with a potentially fraudulent event.

McFarland could face up to 20 years in prison.
