Premiere: Tinsley Ellis Gets Raw in Official Music Video for “Too Broke”
Blues guitarist, singer and songwriter, Tinsley Ellis, is offering a masterclass in passionate musicianship on the second single off his new album, Labor of Love, available in full tomorrow, Jan. 30, 2026. Today, the artist has gifted Relix readers an exclusive look at the official music video for the stoop-sung wisdom submitted on “Too Broke.”
The official music video, directed and edited by Troy Bieser, finds the musician offering acoustic excellence on both guitar and mandolin. Ellis’ take necessitates grit and realness, while married to blues patterns that drive the narrative, a “Too Broke” tale. Co-opting the feel of an old-timey presentation, Ellis sits on the steps outside a white house with black storm shutters that signify a Southern location and a sense of urgency to share his song.
Speaking with Relix, Ellis told us, “‘Too Broke’ is based on an open-tuned guitar lick that I learned from an old Tommy Johnson record. Tommy Johnson was one of the most influential blues artists in Mississippi in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Lyrically, ‘Too Broke’ is a song that almost everyone nowadays can relate to. This is one of my favorites off my new Labor Of Love album, and I really enjoy performing it in concert.”
Labor of Love features 13 original songs, self-produced and performed by Ellis. Like “Too Broke,” the collection centers on the artist’s ability to deliver raw, edgy performances that evoke a full spectrum of emotions, guiding listeners through hard days, times, and seasons.
In support of the impending album arrival, Ellis will kick off a series of home state appearances, beginning tonight, Jan. 29, at Capricorn Studios in Macon. Tomorrow evening, LP release day, he will play at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Ga., before a final Peach State gig on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Rialto Club at Hotel Indigo in Athens, Ga.
Following the initial dates of the tour, Ellis will be on the road for much of February and into March, with appearances spread throughout the country. For tickets and additional information, visit tinsleyellis.com.
