Song Premiere: Hot Mustard “Mustard Green”
The award-winning and critically acclaimed instrumental duo Hot Mustard are gearing up to release their sophomore studio album, Seconds, which is set to drop on March 31, 2023, via Color Red. The musical project–created by Jack Powell and Nick Carusos–immediately stood out as they emerged with an appetizing sound flavored with herbs and spices hand-picked from the late ’60s and early ’70s funk and soul and peppered the rhythm of the golden era of hip-hop, resulting in a completely new sonic dish.
Seconds serves as the follow-up to their debut album Mother Sauce, and today we premiere “Mustard Green,” an aperitif from their forthcoming release. The single features Antibalas Jordan McLean on trumpet and TV on the Radio’s trombonist Dave “Smoota” Smith, both of whom have collaborated with Hot Mustard in the past. On the track, Hot Mustard cook up a simmering, nomadic tune that coaxes the listener’s inner monologue to the forefront of their mind – encouraging them to step up.
“There is some heavy contrast in this one,” Powell shared with Relix, “part of it is light and easy, and part of it is ominous and foreboding. An interpretation that I like is the need to overcome discomfort to reach a higher plateau.”
“Green Mustard,” like several other Hot Mustard tracks, was created with an accompanying music video designed and produced by Powell. The visuals, which are often compared to those by Terry Gilliam (Monty Python), are deeply thought-out and interact with the music directly, cultivating a truly unique listening experience.
“Mustard Green” will be available to stream everywhere on Nov. 18, 2022, and serves as a sneak peek at the upcoming album.
