Watch The Decemberists Play New Album Tracks On _Kimmel_

March 22, 2018

The Decemberists stopped by
Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this week in to support their brand new studio album I’ll Be Your Girl and play some of the albums tracks on the show’s outdoor stage, and the Portland-based indie stalwarts chose a couple of decidedly non-Decemberists-sounding cuts from the collection.

First up is the new album’s lead single, “Severed,” which announced to the band’s fans that this record would have a bit of a different sound—thanks, in part, to new producer John Congleton (The Decemberists had worked with producer Tucker Martine for around a decade)—with its synthy textures and vocal effects. The song translates well to the live stage, with frontman Colin Meloy—sporting a hefty mustache instead of his usual full beard—belting out the choruses.

The band also performs “We All Die Young,” a bluesy,
Jock Jams-sounding cut that features some saxophone work from guitarist Chris Funk. Ever the gentleman, Meloy helps out his bandmate during the performance by tilting his microphone to meet the sax before sticking around Funk’s part of the stage for a quick shoulder rub.

Watch below, and look out for our feature on The Decemberists and
I’ll Be Your Girl in the upcoming April/May issue of Relixout next month
