The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach calls Robert Finley, “the greatest living soul singer as far as I’m concerned.” So it’s no surprise that Auerbach produced Finley’s new album, Goin’ Platinum! and released it on his own Easy Eye Sound label. On Goin’ Platinum, Finley is joined by legendary guitarist Duane Eddy, the Preservation Hall horns, drummer Gene Chrisman (Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin) and keyboard player Bobby Wood (JJ Cale, Bobby Womack). Auerbach wrote some of the songs on the record, which also includes compositions by John Prine, Nick Lowe, and Pat McLaughlin.
Finley is a self-taught musician from Bernice, Louisiana, who toured with the U.S. Army band as a teenager before returning home and becoming a carpenter. He eventually retired due to problems with his eyesight however, the Music Maker Relief Foundation, met him and facilitated his 2016 debut record, Age Don’t Mean a Thing. Auerbach soon saw Finley perform via a video and the two soon fostered a working relationship. In February they will take to the road on the Easy Eye Sound Revue Tour.
Today we premiere the official video for “Holy Wine.” Finley explains, “This as close to gospel as you are going to get. The song tells the story of generations, especially the video, with the baby into young manhood. It’s like three generations in one video. Hopefully it fills a generational gap, that’s what the intention was, to try to bring the old and young together. I think the whole album kind of contributes to that because anytime grandmama and grandchildren can all dance to the same record, that says a lot I think.”
