Watch: Bruce Springsteen Gives Jon Stewart a Final “Moment of Zen”
Last night, Jon Stewart took one of the more graceful final bows in television history as he exited The Daily Show after nearly seventeen years. Naturally, the show was filled with cameos from past correspondents including Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Rob Riggle, previous host Craig Kilborn, Olivia Munn, Steve Carrell and numerous others. Stewart also acknowledged each member of his staff with a Goodfellas-like segment along with a final monologue to Camera 3. It was short and sweet, but it was definitely perfect.
To close it all out, in what Stewart called his “moment of zen,” the host invited Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band out for their first performance together in more than a year. The band tore through “Land of Hope and Dreams,” which Springsteen said was a request from Stewart and then a brief “Born to Run” as the host, his staff and others flooded the floor in celebration.
Notable was Stewart’s introduction of The Boss, as he said, “An artist I really admire said that he thinks of his career as a long conversation with the audience. And I really like that metaphor for many different reasons. But the main one is, because it takes away the idea of finality.” He added, “This show isn’t ending. We’re merely taking a small pause in the conversation. So rather than saying goodbye, or goodnight, I’m just gonna say: I’m gonna go get a drink, and I’m sure I’ll see you guys before I leave.”
