Watch Trey Anastasio Reflect on the 25th Anniversary of Phish’s First MSG Performance

Ahead of Phish’s upcoming New Years Eve run at Madison Square Garden, guitarist Trey Anastasio made an appearance on SiriusXM’s Phish Radio. During the discussion, host Ari Fink pointed out that this year’s Dec. 30 performance will mark the 25th anniversary of Phish’s first ever show at the World’s Most Famous Arena, which occurred on Dec. 30, 1994.

“Wow,” exclaimed Anastasio, immediately. Fink then noted that the band has played over 60 shows at the venue (65 to be exact; after this year’s run it will be 69 total shows). He then asked Anastasio, “Did you ever think, when you first played MSG, that you would build this kind of relationship with that room?”

“No, I mean I didn’t think that at the time,” replied the guitarist as he rested his head on his hand. After a moment of thought, Anastasio declared: “the relationship that we have with Madison Square Garden has exceeded the relationship that we had with Nectar’s – at this point in time – which is pretty incredible.” Incredible indeed; Nectar’s, the small Burlington, Vt. venue is where Phish first cut their teeth, performing 46 shows there from 1984 to 1989.

SiriusXM released a video of this except of the conversation; watch the entire clip below.

Phish will ring in the new decade with four performances at Madison Square Garden beginning on December 28.
