Today in 1998: Phish Honor Jerry Garcia with “Terrapin Station”
Lee Butterworth
While Trey Anastasio participated in the Fare Thee Well run with the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, Phish as a band has had a tendency to slightly stray away from their very obvious musical connection to the Grateful Dead, except on one night in 1998 as they rolled into Virginia Beach on August 9, the three year anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death.
In one of the more poignant tributes to Garcia following his death, Phish debuted a perfect reading of “Terrapin Station” in the encore at Virginia Beach Amphitheatre. It was only played once ever, on this very night, and rightfully so, serving as a powerful statement that stretched from Vermont to San Francisco.
As we mark Garcia’s passing today, relive that moment below.
