Hey, I’m a sucker for weird mashups. Take two disparate songs and make them fit together in a strange and interesting way, and I’m in. This new one might take the cake in that department, though, as some wonderful human has stitched together a Frankenstein’s monster of a track using The Mountain Goats’ defiant anthem “This Year” with the theme song from everyone’s favorite Bill Murray vehicle, Space Jam. 

Fair warning: this mashup is absolutely ridiculous (mostly because the Space Jam theme song is absolutely ridiculous), but the fact that it pairs two bits of media that came at just the right time for my own personal timeline (Space Jam in 1996 when I was a basketball-loving youngster, The Mountain Goats Sunset Tree in 2005 when I was a indie-loving, angsty teenager) makes it all the better—the perfect match of nostalgia and absurdity—plus, the execution is fairly spot-on.

No matter your age, let’s all enjoy the fact that someone had the notion and the free time to create such a gorgeous monstrosity—not necessarily the mashup we deserve, but, with its enlightening mix of “I’m gonna make it through this year/If it kills me” and “Work that body/Work that body/Make sure you don’t hurt nobody,” definitely the one we need right now.
