Song Premiere: The Disco Biscuits’ Aron Magner Revisits Jazz Roots with new Trio

The Disco Biscuits’ Aron Magner began his career as a teenager, performing piano in traditional jazz settings. He will return to his musical origins with his new trio, SPAGA. The group, which also features Philadelphia-based jazz players Jason Fraticelli on bass and Matt Scarano on drums will release their full-length, self-titled album will be released July 12 on AM Records.

Today we premiere “Creed,” one of six original compositions on the album. Magner tells Relix, “‘Creed’ is a nod to the past and a wave to the future. The music and its connections to my roots reintroduced me to my first instrument, the piano, while pointing forward towards growth and potential. I wrote the first couple songs for this album with no preconceptions about what it was or what it could be. It was simply music for the sake of music that led to an organic flow of ideas. But after recruiting Philly phenoms Jason Fraticelli on bass and Matt Scarano on drums, the songs began to speak to a shared manifesto—or ‘creed’ if you will—of resilience: hard work, belief, faith. By the time we were finished recording the album, it represented a journey, which will only continue as we begin to play these compositions in a live setting.”

SPAGA will perform a series of gigs over the months to come, including two shows in New Orleans, on April 28 and 29 (with the band’s tour dates listed below the stream). The new song will begin streaming on most services available tomorrow and can be pre-saved, via this link.
