Remembering Trey’s Appearance with Another Tom (Petty)

October 6, 2017

During the summer of 2006 Trey Anastasio spent some extended time on the road with someone named Tom, who was not his longtime collaborator Tom Marshall. Over two months, Anastasio and his band opened for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers on their “Highway Companions Tour.” The first these shows took place on June 9 in Charlotte, NC and the tour extended through August 8 in Clarkston, MI. Anastasio did not make any guest appearances with Petty until that final performance at the DTE Energy Music Amphitheatre. On that evening the Phish guitarist emerged for the second of three encore songs, a cover of Van Morrison’s “Mystic Eyes.” The tune, which Morrison wrote in the mid-60s for his group Them, was a relatively common one for Petty and the Heartbreakers that summer and the group played a few additional times over the years to follow.

While we don’t have audio from that night in Michigan, we can share the above photo. In addition, Them’s original and the Petty cover both appear below.
