Planet of the Abts with Warren Haynes and Hook Herrera “Killing Floor”
Gov’t Mule will end their 2011 hiatus with a performance at Asheville, NC’s Christmas Jam this coming weekend. But last night three of the band’s four members shared the stage at Brooklyn, NY’s Brooklyn Bowl during a performance by Planet of the Abts, a new band comprised of Mule drummer Matt Abts, Mule bassist Jorgen Carlsson and guitarist T-Bone Andersson. During the group’s encore, Warren Haynes and harmonica player Hook Herrera also joined Plant of the Abts onstage for a few songs, including Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Kiling Floor” (a tribute to Wolf’s longtime bandmate Hubert Sumlin who passed away on Sunday). The only missing member of Mule’s current lineup was keyboardist Danny Louis, who spent the weekend playing with Levon Helm. Fittingly, Herrera was actually a guest at the very first Mule show in 1994.
