Today marks the official opening of Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads music venue in San Rafael, CA. To celebrate the occasion, we look back on some of our favorite moments from the bassist’s storied career.

To start, no Phil Lesh tribute would be complete without including what is considered to be one of Lesh’s finest performances to date. We’re talking about the version of “Dark Star” from the Dead’s performance in Rotterdam, ND on May 5, 1972. This well-known version from the Dead’s Europe ‘72 tour features an abundance Lesh’s signature “lead” lines, intertwining with Jerry’s guitar playing throughout, until a midsection when the music fades away, paving a path for an extended bass solo that brings the song back to its original theme.Next up, we turn to the “Mind Left Body Jam” from November 11, 1973 at the Winterland Arena which emerges from a gorgeous version of “Dark Star.” Phil is one again in fine form throughout this majestic version.Here we have nearly three hours of Phil & Friends’ performance from the Tweeter Center in Camden, NJ on July 28, 2001. The show kicks off with an extended jam into “The Wheel,” featuring the allstar lineup of consisting of Lesh, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Rob Barraco and John Molo. Again, no Phil Lesh tribute would be complete without mention of the Phil Lesh & Friends performance featuring Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell from the Warfield in 1999. Below you can view 45 minutes of the group’s performance from April 15. Last but not least, we close out with Furthur’s “Mountain Song” from TRI Studios on June 7, 2011. While not always noted for vocal abilities, Lesh rises to the occasion on this version and delivers a truly heartfelt version of the Furthur original.
