Listen: 49 Years Ago Today, The Beach Boys Jammed with the Grateful Dead at Fillmore East

April 27 marks the 49th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s enlistment of the Beach Boys for a surprise joint performance at New York’s historic Fillmore East.

“We got another famous California group, it’s the Beach Boys,” Jerry Garcia declared from the stage in 1971, in the midst of the band’s five-night run (the evening prior, the Dead welcomed Duane Allman to the stage for versions of “Sugar Magnolia,” “It Hurts Me Too” and “Beat It On Down The Line”).

To start, the Beach Boys lineup of Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston joined the San Francisco collective for the Coasters tune “Searchin'” as well as The Robins’ “Cell Block #9,” before the Dead departed the stage. The Beach Boys then served up stand alone versions of classics like “Good Vibrations” and “I Get Around.”

The Dead eventually returned to the stage to back the Beach Boys on “Help Me Rhonda,” a standout “Okie From Muskogee” and the Chuck Berry rocker “Johnny B. Goode.”

Listen to the two bands collaborate on “Searchin'” and “Okie From Muskogee” and check out the full setlist below:
