Watch John Mayer Perform “New Light” and “Fire On the Mountain” for ‘Kimmel’ Audience

John Mayer may be done with Dead & Company touring for the year, but the guitarist is still out there spreading the good word about the music of the Grateful Dead—among other things—and he stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live yesterday to perform some songs for the live audience, including the Dead’s “Fire on the Mountain,” and speak with Kimmel about playing with Dead & Co. and the perks of being friends with comedian Dave Chappelle, plus his upcoming “season” of Instagram stories.

On Kimmel‘s outdoor stage, Mayer performed his solo single “New Light,” which is what made the cut for last night’s television airing of the show, along with “Fire on the Mountain,” which didn’t make the show but can be seen below in fan-shot video. Mayer clearly can’t get enough of playing Dead, and also mentioned to Kimmel during his interview that he knew he wanted to play with members of the Dead right when he first heard the music (he also graciously accepts Kimmel’s declaration that Mayer is “to the Grateful Dead what John Stamos is to the Beach Boys).

Along with discussing why performing at Dave Chappelle’s shows makes the audience think he’s also funny, Mayer shows off some of those comedy chops by participating in a gag where he pretends his copious use of Instagram Stories is actually a expensively produced show (he brags that they shot over six thousand episodes last year alone). There’s also a bit about a future meme featuring nuns and raccoons, but that’s better left explained by Mayer.

Watch Mayer’s Kimmel appearance below. The guitarist will appear this weekend at Louisville’s Bourbon & Beyond festival, which is currently the only date left on his schedule.
