Happy Opening Day: Musical First Pitches, Ranked
Few sports make as big of a deal about opening day as Major League Baseball. It’s an event, the first sign of warm weather ahead and the start of a 162-game journey to the World Series. Well, that day is today and all around the country people are gearing up for hot dogs, cold beer and America.
Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a fair amount of musicians take to the mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a respective ball park around the country. We’ve also seen rock royalty take in a game together and of course there was that time Jack White really hated spending the day at Wrigley Field. The first pitch, however, holds a special place in the ceremonial aspect that is baseball. There have been great ones, and there have also been terrible ones. The pitches that make you think what the hell the artist or celebrity was thinking when they agreed to do it.
With that, here are musical first pitches, ranked:
1. Buddy Guy (If I can stand at the top of the mound at the age of 74 and get a baseball to the catcher, I’d call that a good life)
2. Eddie Vedder (The guy throws a DART. On the level of George W. Bush at Yankee Stadium with a bulletproof vest. Vedder is a #2 starter on the Cubs last year with stuff like that)
3. Trey Anastasio (Some shocking flexibility from the Phish guitarist. Look at that turn!)
4. Brendan Bayliss (Props to going to the top of the mound, where the real men throw from. It bounced, but surely still a monumental moment for the longtime Cubs fan)
5. Snoop Dogg (Snoop makes his athleticism known, so this was disappointing. He got it there, I guess)
6. Jack White (Opted for the “throw it really high and hope it gets there” approach and it didn’t get there)
7. Geddy Lee (What was the point?)
8,000,000. 50 Cent
Watch all first pitches below and best of luck to your baseball team of choice this year. Not pictured, of course, is the latest first pitch from Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart which I’m sure went swimmingly since Kreutzmann reportedly dosed the ball before throwing the pitch. For those pitches where video was available, check ’em out below.
