DAY ONE

March 25, 2013

I remember reading somewhere that a person can only get to know their true self by removing all of their normal surroundings. Familiar places, familial faces, and previously traveled routes all go out the window. Over the years, of touring worldwide, I’ve definitely found that there’s a certain degree of self-discovery that happens when I travel to new places.

When you find yourself in a new land you rely on instincts because you are working within a totally new framework. You discover new sounds, smells and faces and so begins a new definition of your being. We are, after all, a product of the amalgam of earthly experiences.

You do laundry, pack your bags, charge your devices, ready your international chargers, change your money, grab your passport, tie up loose ends at home and get your ass to the airport in time.
You extrapolate the travel data the best you can… quantify time zone differences, currency exchange rates and temperature conversions.

I myself, pack light. Guitar, iPad, stage clothes, Clif bars, Beats headphones. I pray my prized Les Paul doesn’t get crushed. I worry about whether or not they will let me take it on board. Some airline personnel are sweethearts; they cherish music and make it a priority to take care of the axe. Others do not give one shit about you or your six string.

My name is Devon Allman. I’m from the historic musical Allman family. I’m a member of Royal Southern Brotherhood. I’m a hot sauce pimp, board member of the National Blues Museum and a father to one of the coolest young men you’ll ever meet.

Apparently, I’m the first Allman to tour in Australia. I’ve gone from being a young kid spinning Santana and Led Zeppelin on vinyl and dreaming of playing music….to becoming an adult, making albums, touring the world and now playing festivals with the likes of, you guessed it, Santana and Robert Plant.

I’m living my dreams and I’m constantly humbled and mystified.

I’m at the airport and I’m beyond stoked.

Thanks for coming along for the ride!
