Day Five

Australia is growing on me hardcore. You know how it is when you vacation to a tropical island. Seems like everyone just has a very peaceful, centered disposition. You greet them and they smile back. It’s a fine, fine life ..a little slower, and the people radiate kindness to complement the pace. Australia seems to have that all over…but it by no means moves too slow either. I mean I’m sure they have assholes too, but they must all be hiding out since everyone I’ve met is just a peach.

I hit the grocery and grabbed cereal and bananas. Musicians, I was once told by Frank Zappa’s former masseuse, are to have two bananas a day…helps the circulation. Good thing I like those sons-a-bitches ‘cause that’s a lotta bo-nana.

I hopped a cab and went to the National Gallery of Victoria. I had a hot date with some paint. Art is a big passion of mine. On tour anywhere in the world, if I have a few hours to spare in the daytime, I’m taking in art. I have a little ritual…designer chocolate and ethereal music of some kind in my headphones. It’s truly transcendental…and I highly recommend it. Today it was Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain, sometimes it’s Thievery Corporation. It’s an ocular high…paintings are to my eyes what amazing music is to the ears.

After the paintings I had tea time with myself and got that old itch to get some paint of my own. I hit the streets of downtown Melbourne knowing I’d run into a tattoo shop and lo and behold, Dieter hurt me real good with a needle and entertained me with his gruff x-rated Aussie brogue. I loved him immediately.

Soundcheck went well today and my bandmate, Mike Zito and I got to go over some business details for the coming touring season. Tonight we play a very cool spot and I’m damn glad to be here, down under. I’ll let ya know how the gig goes ma–ana.

Oh yeah, I put all of today’s expenses on the Underhill’s credit card. Want the number ?
