Moken: Missing Chapters

Singer-songwriter Moken was born in Cameroon, resides in Atlanta, and sounds like a blend of Tiny Tim and Anohni (the artist formerly known as Antony Hegarty). Moken Nunga’s second album, Missing Chapters (MoodSwing), is a sprawling self-produced meditation on the feels and frictions of an African abroad. “You will never be in the right place here in America,” he sings in “Yen Nin” amid a typically quirky and detailed arrangement with synths and a banjo. Songs like “Your Sun Is Rising” sound nostalgic and futurist at the same time, with Moken’s acrobatic voice cartwheeling from a rich baritone to an utterly unique falsetto warble on this sweet slice of real-life afrofuturism.
