The Arctic Monkeys are nearing the end of what seems to have been a fun-as-hell North American tour in support of their recent effort Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, and Alex Turner and company are out there offering tributes to some of the bands that have influenced his own group’s music since they got their start 15 years ago. 

Late last month, Arctic Monkeys unveiled their cover of The Strokes’ “Is  This It” in Queens, and on Wednesday night in Detroit, the band nodded to local garage-rock icon Jack White and his former outfit The White Stripes with a cover of “The Union Forever” from the Stripes’ 2001 breakout album White Blood Cells. That album came out the same year as The Strokes’ debut Is This It, just around the era that Turner and his group were getting together. As NME notes, Arctic Monkeys even covered multiple White Stripes and Strokes songs at their very first gig in 2003. 

Turner has long since mastered the middle ground of swinging between lounge crooner and rock-and-roll belter, and he brings a bit of both to this cover of a classic deeper Stripes cut that is a bit all over the place (and takes its inspiration and lyrics from legendary film Citizen Kane—to the point that the band faced a lawsuit in 2003), making for an overall fun, rocking rendition by the English group.
