Tim Kasher: No Resolution

Akin to an indie-rock opera, Tim Kasher’s No Resolution flows like a river doubling back on itself, revisiting tunes with several reprises and beginning with a pared-down melody that hints at its expansive finale. Kasher has come to be known for such compositions, both with his solo work and his output with bands Cursive and The Good Life. This time around, he’s going even further down the rabbit hole, pairing No Resolution with a film of the same name that he wrote and directed. The album—much like the film—deals with a young couple working through several issues, more broadly, the notions of adulthood and settling down. The image of a pregnancy test and rumination on children emerge in “Runts,” while “An Answer for Everything” has the couple reminiscing of simpler days in their relationship. All along, Kasher matches his clear and poignant lyrics with lush arrangements of strings, guitar, piano, percussion and horns, turning the whole affair into a grandiose production of emotional honesty. The bouncy “Messes” serves as a sort of belly-of-the-whale moment in the latter third of the album, with lyrics like, “If there’s a reason we exist/ Surely I am blowing it,” while several songs later, Kasher delivers the telling final track of the opus, “Not Over You,” a slowburner that ends in flowing, wonderfully over-the-top strings echoing his chorus of “I am not over you being over me” into infinity.
