Rock-and-Roll Confidence

Bassist Nick Stout and guitarist Craig Broombaugh moved from their hometown of Detroit to California over a decade ago to get acquainted with the California pop-punk scene. In the years since, the longtime friends and collaborators have transformed their musical aspirations into Filmspeed, a power trio that maintains that punk spirit through a wider rock-and-roll lens that, as Stout explains, stems from the varied influences and musical interests of the three members. “We are an eclectic bunch,” he says, noting his own love of Less Than Jake and Run the Jewels, and Broombaugh’s inclination toward the music of Butch Walker and AC/DC. There’s one thing that connects all the band members, though: “We all love rock-and-roll,” Stout says. “So we went forth with the idea to do all types.” And although Filmspeed has been through a couple different drummers along the way, Stout says the group has clicked more than ever with current timekeeper Oliver Dobrian. The trio prepped an album’s worth of songs for release this year, but their real passion lies in live performance. “For three people, we try to produce a lot of energy, a lot of sound,” Stout says. “You gotta have fun onstage because, man, that’s what live shows are all about. If you’re not doing what you love, people see that. You need to be 100 percent confident and go in for yourself. I think that’s what people see when they see us.”
