Zevious: Passing Through the Wall
Distortion-drenched power trio meets the new Zen jazz on New York-based Zevious’s Passing Through the Wall, which combines the ferocious precision of fusion/prog pioneers such as the Mahavishnu Orchestra and King Crimson with the low-improv compositional minimalism of trance-jazz acts like Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin and Dawn Of Midi. In tracks like “White Minus Red” and “Entanglement,” former jazzbos Johnny DeBlase (bass), Mike Eber (guitar) and cousin Jeff Eber (drums) pulsate polyrhythmically in various time signatures that coalesce into loud and colorfully hypnotic patterns. The experience is more chilling than ecstatic, however—especially in their seriously dark closer, “Plying the Cold Trade.”
