Four Tet: There Is Love In You

After the exploding color-blossoms of 2005’s Everything Ecstatic, it was hard to imagine where Four Tet mastermind Kieran Hebden could go with his brand of cinematic, electro-acoustic head-exploders. After a few frantic years of collaboration (including four albums with veteran free jazz/soul drummer Steve Reid and two LPs producing the Massachusetts improv collective, Sunburned Hand of the Man), There Is Love In You is a work of consolidation. Instead of upping the ante, Hebden goes wide with subtly dramatic headphone panoramas ( “Circling” ), not-quite-downtempo drifts ( “Plastic People” ) and sharply-cut pop instrumentals ( “She Just Likes To Fight” ). There’s still plenty for brain-jammers, but Hebden seems to be searching for a new path to ecstasy.
