Trey Anastasio took the stage at Vail, Colo.’s Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater on Wednesday for the sixth performance in his acoustic tour. At the run’s midpoint, the Phish frontman is still somehow still building out his live repertoire, with three new additions to the mix shining within a set of 23 solo and duet arrangements with pianist Jeff Tanski. The first of those, which opened the show, was “Walfredo,” a true live rarity.
“Walfredo” is a non-album track written collaboratively by all four members of Phish, which the band debuted in 1997 and has only dusted off four times since, most recently in 2014. Anastasio had taken the song out solo only once before, during a 2017 acoustic performance at Northampton, Mass.’s Academy of Music Theatre – the first show in his first solo acoustic outing.. Wednesday’s revival was the longest gap in stagings of the 2026 acoustic tour so far, just beating out his resurrection of “Buffalo Bill” (last played in 2018) on Friday. Back-to-back treatments of “Kill Devil Falls” and “Gumbo” at the midpoint in last night’s performance were also new to the mix of songs Anastasio and Tanski will have on the road this tour.
In April, Anastasio announced the July release of Trey Anastasio – Live and Acoustic, his first independent live album since 2020’s Burn It Down and a record of his 20-show series with Tanski from last spring, which marked his first proper acoustic tour in six years. The album will feature 22 tracks culled from the run’s repertoire, including Phish classics like “Stash,” “Billy Breathes,” “Lifeboy” and “Divided Sky,” all produced by Vance Powell.
Anastasio will perform next at Morrison, Colo.’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on June 7. The singer-songwriter and guitarist’s first symphonic show at the hallowed outdoor stage – and his first appearance at the venue since 2022 – will feature accompaniment from the esteemed Colorado Symphony, with whom he last shared a spotlight in 2012.
