Today, June 24, Blue Note has confirmed the opening date, location and initial calendar for its highly-anticipated Los Angeles location. Following delays in permitting and construction due to the fires earlier this year, the new addition to the iconic brand of jazz clubs–which includes its original flagship location in New York and others in Napa, Calif., Waikiki, Hawaii, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Milan and more–will officially open to the public on August 14 and 15 with a special inaugural residency by jazz giant and Blue Note Jazz Festival curator Robert Glasper.
“I’m honored to partner up with Blue Note and open the doors to what will be a significant cultural intersection for the Los Angeles community,” Glasper shared. “Los Angeles has always been a second home to me, and I can’t wait to bring L.A. culture to the Blue Note.”
Blue Note LA, located at 6372 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, boasts an outstanding opening calendar of performers. Today’s dispatch outlines more than 50 honored acts set to take the stage in the venue’s 200-person capacity main room, with secondary programming for its 100-person “B-Side” room to follow. Highlights among the artists booked to introduce the venue include esperanza spalding, Kenny Garrett, Killer Mike, Slum Village, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Aja Monet, Tank and The Bangas, Theo Croker, Ben Folds, the Charles Lloyd Quartet and a combo of Marcus King, Chris Dave, Cory Henry and DJ Ginyard, which follows King and Dave’s acclaimed residency at Blue Note New York.
Much of the programming is tailored to reflect Los Angeles’ unique musical culture, and local icons like Terrance Martin, Kamasi Washington, Too $hort, Keyon Harrold, Braxton Cook, The Free Nationals, Kiefer and more will bring the city’s cutting edge to the new spotlight.
“Blue Note LA will focus on curated and consistent, artist-driven programming in that intimate Blue Note Jazz Club vibe that people love,” Director of Programming at Blue Note Entertainment Group Alex Kurland detailed. “Blue Note New York has a uniquely New York energy, and for Blue Note LA, it’s important to honor what makes this city’s creative energy and spirit so distinctive. Blue Note embraces the space to collaborate and experience those spontaneous moments that are special. We’re thankful to all the artists and their teams who are a part of this opening season of shows. They’re helping set the tone to launch Blue Note LA.”
