Lucinda Williams and Mavis Staples have united for a new cover of Bob Marley’s “So Much Trouble In the World,” previewing Williams’ 16th studio album, World’s Gone Wrong. The Americana icon’s follow-up to 2023’s triumphant Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart, arriving on Jan. 23 via her own Highway 20 Records, confronts the trouble in America with the kind of direct, uncompromising songwriting that only she can channel. Her duet with Staples imbues Marley’s timeless message with new life and gravity.
“So Much Trouble In The World’ was a song that hit me right away, and we had been messing around with for a few years,” Williams said in a statement. “When the new album started to take on a topical nature we knew that we absolutely had to get it recorded. It was a centerpiece of the record and who better to get to sing it with me than Mavis Staples. I am so thrilled that the two of us could finally do something together, and on such an amazing song.”
Williams cut her forthcoming project at Nashville, Tenn.’s Room & Board Studio with co-producers Tom Overby and longtime collaborator Ray Kennedy, who also recorded and mixed the album. Alongside the powerful cover, the album features nine new original songs, including the recently released title track and “We’ve Come Too Far to Turn Around,” a hymn of resistance featuring piano and harmony vocals from Norah Jones.
