Listen to Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Cover John Mayer’s “New Light”
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong broke the jam internet this summer when frontman Greg Ormont managed to give John Mayer one of the band’s DisNYE guitar picks backstage at LOCKN’, and Mayer immediately used it onstage during the now-famous Foundations of Funk set featuring Bob Weir, George Porter Jr., Zigaboo Modeliste, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and more.
Now the PPPP/Mayer crossover has escalated even further. On Oct. 4, the Baltimore-based quartet covered Mayer’s song-of-the-summer “New Light” in the guitarist’s adopted hometown of Los Angeles. Sandwiched within PPPP’s original “Drunk People,” the synthy feel-good tune fits perfectly into their funk-fueled oeuvre.
“We’ve never played that before,” Ormont said afterwards. “We were playing it for our buddy John who put out a new song called ‘New Light’ that just went gold today.”
