ShwizZ: My Good Side/My Bad Side
Nyack, N.Y.-based progfusion monsters ShwizZ have dropped their sophomore album, My Good Side/My Bad Side, and at the record’s core it is an exercise in diversity. They certainly take their fusion experiments seriously, as this recent double album illustrates—touting musings of Latin, jazz, funk, power ballads, progressive metal, sing-along anthems and choir music over two discs that are sewn together seamlessly. Furthermore, the band is tuned 8Hz below what most people are used to hearing, resulting in a sneaky, almost-subliminal, body-calming effect. While some tracks are brand new, much of the content is recognizable from ShwizZ’s notoriously wacky shows, such as fan favorite and perfect rage track “Doorbell.” One fantastic surprise is legendary Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess’ guest solo on My Good Side’s final track, “Duggan.” As the title suggests, My Good Side/My Bad Side expresses a multitude of human emotions with more lucidity than one could expect from therapy.
