Shook Twins: Some Good Lives

Identical twins Katelyn and Laurie Shook take the sentiments expressed in the title of their fourth album seriously, offering homage to the various men in their lives—from those who have passed, such as their grandfather and godfather, to those they expressly admire, citing Bernie Sanders in particular. The sisters refer to the soft, sumptuous Some Good Lives as a statement of gratitude and it shows. The love and affection is readily apparent, from the shimmer and sway of “Safe” and “Figure It Out,” to the ethereal effects that waft through “Stay Wild,” “Got Your Message” and “What Is Blue.” It’s not entirely subdued; sassy, spunky opening track “What Have We Done” is flush with brassy R&B that’s clearly and convincingly delivered. Other offerings—“Wantlove,” “Buoy,” “No Choice” and “Talkie Walkie”—coast on their relaxed rhythms and an easy lilt that’s both earnest and engaging. Indeed, that quiet caress blends a sense of innocence and charm. That said, the arrangements sometimes seem a trifle too subdued to leave a more indelible impression, which causes one to wonder if, in fact, the Shooks ought to consider shaking things up a bit. Doing so might help underscore the notion that, even today, there are good lives that can still be celebrated and sanctified.
