On Unsung Cities and Movies Never Made, keyboardist Page McConnell shows off a completely different side of his musicianship than he’s displayed with Phish and the many side projects he’s participated in during the last 30 years. For the album, which was released exclusively on vinyl for Record Store Day, McConnell rounded up a troupe of musicians including Tea Leaf Green bassist Reed Mathis, guitarist Adam Zimmon and drummer Gabe Jarrett to record instrumental soundtracks for movies that, as of yet, don’t exist. McConnell, who wrote all of the songs, takes listeners on an aural excursion through 10 completely different soundscapes, expertly pulled off by his talented quartet. The opening track “Arbor Day” starts slow and moody, setting the tone for the impressive compositions that follow, which are deliciously far from Phish’s live shows.
