Lucius: Good Grief
Following the acclaim that greeted their 2013 debut Wildewoman, Lucius faced a daunting task in attempting to match that high bar with their sophomore set. It seemed that they had been instantly elevated to some upper tier and described with the same reverence that’s generally accorded to those with far fuller résumés. Fortunately, the unabashed exuberance and air of cacophony demonstrated the first time around surfaces yet again on Good Grief, an ideal example of a delivery that exceeds the expectations that come courtesy of its dual provocateurs, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig. Each is a formidable vocalist and, together, they create an imposing presence. On songs like “Something About You,” “Almost Makes Me Wish for Rain” and “Truce” they convey a sense of absolute urgency, as if they’re women possessed. Desire and desperation are blended in equal measure, and when they wail, “I can be the one that’s going insane” on the hyper descriptive “Gone Insane,” it doesn’t seem like such a stretch. “Madness” conveys many of the same sentiments—albeit it with some restraint—and, indeed, with the possible exception of closing track “Dusty Trails,” the entire album basks in a kind of dire delirium. This is music with an irrepressible edge.
