Liam Gallagher: As You Were
Is Liam Gallagher’s music as interesting as everything that spews out of his mouth offstage? It’s a hard question to answer, especially in light of his ongoing and very public feud with brother and former Oasis bandmate Noel. Still, it’s fun to guess whether any of the tracks off his debut solo album, As You Were, are targeted at Noel. Is rollicking thumper “Greedy Soul” a dig at Gallagher’s estranged brother or is the singer simply annoyed at someone else in the industry? And it’s curious who the mark might be on “You Better Run,” a brash rock song in which Gallagher intones, “I’m gonna steal your thunder/you better run/ you better hide.” On “Bold,” an acoustic guitar-led number that harkens back to Oasis, the musician knows who he is and he’s not afraid to admit it, “Yes I know I’ve been bold,” he sings, “I didn’t do what I was told.” As a whole, As You Were is a good album, both because Gallagher is a great songwriter and because he’s willing to unleash these genuine sentiments. The album is well-crafted and carefully edited; each song contains the exact elements it needs. Gallagher is perpetually the star of his own music, as a real rock star should be, and he’s made these songs lively with his mouthy, swaggering persona. He’s also willing to be vulnerable when needed, like on “For What It’s Worth,” an emotionally wrought ballad on which Gallagher admits, “I’ve made my own mistakes.” The album is at least as engaging as following him on Twitter, if not more so.
