Recorded during a transition period in 1969 prior to his landmark Woodstock gig, Valleys of Neptune finds Jimi Hendrix at an interesting artistic crossroads. These 12 tracks – re-worked originals ( “Fire” ), covers (Elmore James’ “Bleeding Heart” ) and some jaw-dropping unreleased material (the extraordinary title track) – feature the guitarist neither exploring space as he did on Electric Ladyland, nor hitting heavy funk geography as he later would with the Band of Gypsies. Joined by future B of G bassist Billy Cox, and featuring Hendrix’s last recordings with Experience bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, the songs sound remarkably modern, tight and vigorous, if not completely vital Hendrix listening.
