Garcia Peoples take a great leap forward on One Step Behind (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond), the sextet’s third album in about fourteen months. Come for the title track, a thirty-two-minute trip through the spaceways. Songwriter-guitarist Tom Malach’s father, veteran session cat Bob Malach, adds multitracked saxophones as the band rambles through various woolly stations of the groove, ultimately concocting a nifty blend of Terry Riley minimalism and kosmische/ krautrock. Stick around for a heartfelt nightcap—bassist Derek Spaldo’s “Heart and Soul,” featuring a flute assist from keyboardist Pat Guber.
