Frank Zappa: Funky Nothingness

Interested in about three and a half hours of brilliant unheard Frank Zappa studio work from 1970? Then Funky Nothingness (Zappa/UMe) is for you. Recorded with a core group consisting of Zappa, Aynsley Dunbar (drums), Ian Underwood (keyboards, reeds), Max Bennett (bass) and Don “Sugarcane” Harris (violin), this set captures the transition from Hot Rats to Chunga’s Revenge with inventive new compositions (“Khaki Sack,” “Twinkle Tits”), unexpected jam vehicles (“Sharleena”), greasy blues covers (“I’m a Rollin’ Stone”) and plenty of drum/guitar madness. The best of it splits the difference between impressive studio professionalism and the down-and-dirty sounds embodied by bluesman Harris and FZ at his best.
