Fox Street: Authentic Western Style

Lee Zimmerman on August 26, 2015

Any band that calls Denver home has the right to title their third album Authentic Western Style, even if Southern-style R&B is more their forte. (Note the cover of “Southern Nights.”) Nevertheless, Fox Street gained considerable cred when the local press proclaimed them as hometown heroes. The presence of special guests—bassist Todd Smallie (JJ Grey & Mofro) and Bill McKay (Leftover Salmon)—add some star power, but there’s never any doubt that the group itself is steering these proceedings, whether it’s the sturdy soulful groove of “Something About You” and “Justified,” the frenzied funk of the title track or the pining, emotionally charged delivery of “Our Garden.” Lead singer Jonathan Huvard’s riveting vocals recall Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett in both range and intensity, and when underscored by brass and relentless rhythms, help that style become all the more exhilarating.
