You’d be hard pressed to find a more colorful, mystical or talented musician than Dr. John. He’s been a staple of the Crescent City since the 1950s and there’s a reason that the five-time Grammy Award winner is considered the living embodiment of New Orleans music. On Tribal, Dr. John returns to his psychedelic Night Tripper roots with an album full of swamp funk, rock, moody jazz, dirty R&B, Indian chants and Creole voodoo. Bolstered by contributions from Allen Toussaint, Donald Harrison, Derek Trucks and the late Bobby Charles, Dr. John also incorporates the socio-political commentary he’s spearheaded since Hurricane Katrina as well as his unmistakable wry sense of humor. Backed by his stellar band, The Lower 911, Tribal is a wonderful addition to an already historic career.
