Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band: American Legacies

McCoury Music and Preservation Hall
Think of Del McCoury and his band as a spicy seasoning in the Dixieland Jazz stew of American Legacies. One minute, you’re foot tapping to trumpet-filled Dixieland standards such as “The Band’s in Town” or “I’ll Fly Away” and the next, McCoury’s distinctive voice or his band’s equally exquisite playing kick in. The effect is akin to adding a few extra dashes of Tabasco sauce to an already tangy recipe. That’s not to say that Del and his band take musical backseats on these 11 songs. One listen to the picking and singing (and, yes, likely grinning) on the full-out Dixieland standard “Sugar Blues” or newly horn-infused bluegrass anthems such as “Banjo Frisco,” and you’ll hear American Legacies meld two distinctive formats into one sonic treat.
