CBDB: The FAME EP

Matt Inman on October 30, 2015

CBDB combine impressive musicianship and solid songwriting with more than a hint of having a good time—a trifecta that is rarely seen in any band, let alone one as ambitious as they are. They call their genre “joyfunk,” and while their current sound tends to be a bit more progressive than classic funk, there’s no doubting that these guys have fun. CBDB’s new EP is a four-song set that showcases the Alabama-based group at its most experimental and effective. Opening track “Ground Score” begins with an undeniable, pulsing guitar riff that gives way to funky drums and a duet with an equally invigorating saxophone line. Then the lyrics kick in, and the party really begins. With CBDB’s musical talent, they might be forgiven for having mediocre vocals to go on top, but Cy Simonton’s soulful delivery is truly the icing on the joyfunk cake.
