Benji Hughes: Songs in the Key of Animals
Benji Hughes knows how to grab your attention—and probably make you smile. He’s a burly dude with a huge beard. His latest album is called Songs in the Key of Animals, and on the cover, he appears with fangs. The track list includes “Peacockin’ Party” and “Shark Attack!!!!!!!!!!” (Yes, that’s 10 exclamation points.) His song “Girls Love Shoes” opens as such: “Girls like the beach. Girls like shopping and yoga. Girls like dancing… Girls like lots of things,” before the beat drops and Hughes croons, “Girls love shoes.” Pop music is full of self-serious and totally generic odes to dance clubs, asses and, of course, love. So you’ve got to hand it to Hughes for simply having fun with his pop. Songs in the Key of Animals delivers 12 deliciously weird, lo-fi keyboard pop tunes, with Hughes’ restrained vocals occasionally adorned by soulful backup vocals or muted horns. Sometimes, Hughes is downright moving—“Magic Summertime” even has a touch of The National’s hopeful melancholy. “There’s gotta be a happy ending. That’s what I’ve always been told,” he sings on “Zebra.” “There’s a prince and a princess lookin’ for a hand to hold.” Key of Animals is unpretentious, unassuming and oddly, appealingly funky.
