“The world seems so noisy these days,” says Jacob Graham (synthesizers/guitar). “We don’t want to be a part of that.” He notes that the group chose The Drums moniker because “we are advocates for simplicity,” adding that the band’s sound is just “pop music” and that he “can’t possibly” describe one of their live shows. In May 2009, the indie trio played their first show. “I thought we had some nice songs, so we moved to New York [from Florida] and gave it our best shot,” Graham reflects. This past summer, the group released their second full-length record, Portamento. The follow-up to last year’s self-titled release and 2009’s Summertime! EP is “similar in the way that we are obsessed with pop songs and the science behind them – and we’re constantly reaching for that ideal,” and is “different in the way that we’ve shed some of our old themes that the general public somehow confused with style,” he says. “The most exciting thing we have coming up is a seasonal update to our amazing new invention, TimeCalc.net,” he says of the new Web tool The Drums created to help calculate the difference between two times quickly. “No one will be able to say we weren’t consistent.”
